First actor recognized in all four category of acting, McDonald broke the record for the number of awards an actor has been awarded. The credits she has in the theater includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). She appeared on the show in 1999. starred along with Kathy Bates in ABC's acclaimed remake of Annie. Also, she had an occasional role in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit in the year 2000. McDonald, who earned an Emmy Award nomination back in 1999 for her performance as a character in an HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit directed and starring Emma Thompson, made her return to the network in 2003 for the drama about politics Mister Sterling. The film was written and produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. McDonald became a character on The Bedford Diaries of the WB series The Bedford Diaries in early the year 2006. Following the season, she was in a role that was recurring on NBC's Television show Kidnapped. McDonald was awarded a fourth Emmy for her role as Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill, which aired on HBO in the year 2016. The following year, McDonald appeared in a telecast with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in the film The Bite, a pandemic drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. Having first appeared in the role of U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's legal show The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald took on her character (now named Liz Reddick) as a season regular on The Good Fight on Paramount+ getting the three Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. The actress is a featured appearance in the HBO series The Gilded Age by Julian Fellowes.
