Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father left her family. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time she was already making her television debut in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
